Zion  VI

1. Zion - siyon - is possibly related to Arabic  sana  from root s-w-n, meaning protect, defend;  hence   siyon  may have meant place of defence, fortress.  Others suggest derivation from root  saha  "be bald."

2. Zion is the fortified mound between the Kidron and the Tyropean valleys that David captured from the Jebusites.

A. 2 Sam. 5:7  Nevertheless, David took the stronghold of Zion: the same is the city of David.

DAVID CAPTURED THE STRONGHOLD.
IT HAD NOT YET BEEN CAPTURED.
PRAISE THE NAME OF THE LORD!
(1) Isa. 2:1 The word that Isaiah the son of Amoz saw concerning  Judah  and Jerusalem. (2) And it shall come to pass in the last days, that the mountain of the Lord's house shall be established (prepared) in the top of the mountains, and shall be exalted above the hills; and all nations shall flow unto it. (3) And many people shall go and say, Come ye, and let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, to the house of the God of Jacob; and he will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths: for out of Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of the Lord  from Jerusalem.

OUT OF ZION SHALL GO FORTH THE LAW, AND
THE WORD OF THE LORD FROM JERUSALEM.
a. Micah 4:2  And many nations shall come, and say, Come, and let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, and to the house of the God of Jacob; and he will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths: for the law shall go forth of Zion, and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem.

A REPEAT OF THE PROPHECY OF ISAIAH
Note:  Subsequently, it became known as the City of David.  With the building of the temple to the north, that hill later became known as Mount Zion.  Zion may even refer specifically to the temple vicinity or more generally to Jerusalem itself; sometimes it includes the entire nation, the covenant community itself.

B. Isa. 1:27  Zion shall be redeemed with judgment, and her converts (they that return of her) with righteousness.

ZION TO BE REDEEMED WITH JUDGMENT
AND THOSE THAT RETURN OF HER WITH RIGHTEOUSNESS
ZION, EVIDENTLY IS A NAME FOR GOD'S GOVERNMENT
C. ZION IN THE PSALMS

1. Psalm 2:1 Why do the heathen rage, and the people imagine a vain thing? (2)  The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the Lord, and against his anointed, saying, (3) Let us break their bands (restraints) asunder, and cast away their cords (ropes)  from us.

THE NATIONS RAGE.
THEY SET THEMSELVES AGAINST THE LORD
AND AGAINST HIS ANOINTED -
BREAK THEIR RESTRAINTS AND ROPES.
a. Psalm 2:4 He that sitteth in the heavens shall laugh: the Lord shall have them in derision (speaking unintelligbly, stammering).(5) Then shall he speak unto them in his wrath, and vex (trouble) them in his sore displeasure.

THE LORD WILL LAUGH AT THEM.
HE WILL CAUSE THEM TO SPEAK UNITELLIGBLY
THEN HE WILL SPEAK TO THEM IN HIS ANGER
AND CAUSE THEM TROUBLE.
Note:  The United Nations are positioning themselves to set themselves against the Lord, even though they do not understand what is happening.

b. Psalm 2:6 Yet have I set (anointed) my king upon my holy hill of Zion (upon Zion, the hill of My holiness).

ANOINTED ON ZION
Note:  What anointing is being spoken of?  Is it the anointing of the King or the anointing for burial?

c. Psalm 2:7 I will declare the decree: the Lord hath said unto me, Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee. (8) Ask of me, and I shall give thee the heathen for thine inheritance, and the uttermost parts of the earth for thy possession. (9) Thou shalt break them with a rod of iron; thou shalt dash them in pieces like a potter's vessel.

THE MISSION OF THE LORD!
d. Psalm 2:10 Be wise now therefore, O ye kings: be instructed, ye judges of the earth. (11) Serve the Lord with fear, and rejoice with trembling. (12) Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and ye perish from the way, when his wrath is kindled but a little. Blessed are all they that put their trust in him.

PRAISE THE LORD!  PUT YOUR TRUST IN HIM!
3. Psalm 9:11 Sing praises to the Lord, which dwelleth in Zion: declare among the people his doings. (12) When he maketh inquisition for blood, he remembereth them: he forgetteth not the cry of the humble (afflicted). (13) Have mercy upon me, O Lord; consider my trouble which I suffer of them that hate me, thou that liftest me up from the gates of death: (14) That I may shew forth all thy praise in the gates of the daughter of Zion: I will rejoice in thy salvation.

THE LORD DWELLS IN ZION.
SING PRAISES TO HIM.
HE WILL REMEMBER YOU.
HE WILL NOT FORGET THE CRY OF THE AFFLICTED.
a. Psalm 9:15 The heathen are sunk down in the pit that they made: in the net which they hid is their own foot taken. (16) The Lord is known by the judgment which he executeth: the wicked is snared in the work of his own hands. Higgaion. Selah. (17) The wicked shall be turned into hell, and all the nations that forget God. (18) For the needy shall not alway be forgotten: the expectation of the poor shall not perish for ever. (19) Arise, O Lord; let not man prevail: let the heathen be judged in thy sight. (20) Put them in fear, O Lord: that the nations may know themselves to be but men. Selah.

THE NATIONS ARE SUNK DOWN IN THE PIT THEY MADE.
PRAISE THE NAME OF JESUS!
